Designing a data integration (iPaaS)
UI for Actian
Computer Software Company in Palo Alto, CA
Challenge
Actian is committed to deploying remarkable data technology to enable business-critical systems can transact and integrate at their very best – on premise, in the cloud or both. The team at Actian sought to refresh three disparate, highly technical data integration and management systems – ultimately combining them into a single iPaaS product with enterprise-grade functionality that even business users can understand.
What We Did
Understanding the Problem
There was a lot to learn, but the team provided the subject matter expertise we needed to move quickly.
We started with a stakeholder kickoff session to understand the current software, the users and roles, and the users stories for each role. As a group, the team mapped out rough, high-level flows of the process users need to move through. We interviewed users to understand their current workflows, workarounds, and needs.
Rapid UI Design & Pattern Library
Through iterative wireframing, we streamlined the user experience and reduced complexity. We designed 3 different look and feel options to establish the visual language, and applied a cohesive look and feel across all the screens - adding summative data visualizations along the way, to make the product more useful. Our pattern library detailed the new design system for easier reuse and governance.
Tight Communication
Throughout the project, we paired closely with the on-site dev manager, who brought a constant flow of information around changing internal priorities. She worked in parallel to gather multiple rounds of user feedback, which fed right into our agile design sprints. Tight communication was important because the product was in development internally while we designed.

Working with Slide UX proved out the value of UX design. With UX designers on the team, Actian was able to clarify requirements, tackle bigger-picture opportunities, and work through potential complications ahead of development. After months of working together, they decided to hire their first full-time UX designer – a process we were pleased to support.
SolutionsReview.com named Actian’s Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) solution as one of the 10 Best Integration Platform as a Service Solutions for 2019, citing its visual interface.
In an interview with Clutch.co, Actian rated Slide UX 5-stars across all metrics.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with them. We’ve had a positive experience with Slide UX. They’re easy to work with.”
