Forbes defines a midlife crisis as "a period of emotional turmoil in middle age, around 40 to 60 years old, characterized by a strong desire for change."
The cause is simple. When we're young, the years ahead seem long. We think we have plenty of time to do things in the future.
In middle age, people tend to realize that the clock is ticking. If they continue to push their dreams out into "tomorrow," they may lose their chance.
The Mid-Year Crisis at Work
I've noticed that there's something similar in the workplace– a "mid-year crisis".
Teams start the year with big ideas. A year seems like a long time. We're planning and thinking. Then spring break comes along. Then its summer. Folks are out... it's not a good time to start. By the time colleagues return from summer vacations, we realize we're behind. Teams are assembled and projects finally get underway, but the holidays are right around the corner, and the launch slips into next year.
Strategic digital work can take months of discovery, iteration, development, and testing. Often, we find teams rushing to spend allocated budget because the project started so late.
In 2023, the Q3 frenzy will be exacerbated by the recessionary uncertainty we have experienced early in the year. Some companies have chosen to slow down and monitor the situation. They are the ones who may not have plans ready when it's go time. They will be competing for limited resources later in the year.
We've all seen the layoff news, and some companies won’t have the same budget or internal team they’d hoped for. But external partners like Slide UX can help bridge that gap and get a smart plan in place.
With our specialized knowledge in UX discovery, UI design, and usability testing, we can help you create a solid plan quickly. Instead of rolling your dreams into 2024, you can launch and iterate before Thanksgiving!
